Online licensing applications

Coming soon – online licensing applications

The council is currently working on a new online licensing application 'portal'.  Many licences which were previously only available to apply for in paper format will soon be available to apply for online.

You will be able to complete licence application forms online through our website, submit additional information to support your application and pay the fees electronically.

Work is still ongoing to make all online applications which require payment available – this will be in place in early 2010.

This new online facility will fulfil the requirements of the European Services Directive.

What is the EU Services Directive?
The EU Services Directive aims to open up the European internal market to cross-border trade by making it easier for service providers to set up business or offer their services in other EU countries. At a local level, The Directive outlines several requirements for councils. These are:

  • Screening and possible adjustment of the existing legislation and the authorisation schemes in them that are related to the relevant service
  • The electronic completion of applications
  • Administrative co-operation
  • Regulation in connection with the rights of recipients of services.

We are currently screening their processes in relation to the licensing regimes that fall within the scope of the Directive. We are working closely with the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) to set up links with their Point of Single Contact (PSC). The PSC will ensure that applicants will be able to access information relating to the council's licensing activities and procedures electronically.

The EU Service Directive does impose a deadline for all local authorities to have the in-scope applications and associated documentation ready to go online by early 2010. We are working to meet this deadline and we will provide updates where necessary.
